Fry Foods

Infusoria
Infusoria would be a good fry food for when they're JUST free swimming. You should feed this for around 3-4 days. The fry will starve if you only feed them infusoria.

Materials:
A Glass Jar
Some Grass clippings/wilted lettuce/aquarium plants
Tank Water
Sunlight

Method:
To make infusoria, around 2 weeks before spawning, put some wilted lettuce into a jar of old tank water. Put this lettuce water in a windowsill or something so that it can get sunlight. In a little while, you might see little creatures swimming around in there

Microworms
This is a great food for young fry. It can also be fed until they are old enough to eat dry foods. Microworms are really easy to culture.

Materials:
-A Tupperware container with Lid
-Any one of these ( instant oatmeal, instant mashed potato flakes, mashed potatoes.. etc. )
-Water (dechlorinated)
-Microworm Culture
-active dry yeast

Method:
I was searching around and found on Wayne Schmidt's site, a recipe. Though i haven't found a culture yet, I've tried mixing this recipe to see if it was very watery or dry. It was perfect. So here goes
1/4 instant oatmeal
1/4 cup of water
Mix the instant oatmeal and water, then add the active dry yeast and Microworm culture and put the lid on.
The process will take a couple days. You should open the lid for a sec daily or punch tiny holes in it so the microworms can have some air. Within a couple days, you will see the worms climbing up the sides of the container. Take something flat, and scrape them off the sides and dump it into your fry tank. Make sure that they're not covered in oatmeal though.

Vinegar Eels
You should not feed your fry JUST vinegar eels. Try to feed them vinegar eels along with microworms or brine shrimp.

Materials:
A Glass Jar or Bottle
Apple Cider Vinegar
Some Apple Slices
Vinegar Eel Starter Culture

Method:
Pour the Apple Cider Vinegar into the Bottle. Do not fill it all the way up. I would just fill it to where the bottle starts to curve. Place the apple slices and the starter culture in. Put the bottle in a dark place or wrap something around it and in a few weeks, you'll see your vinegar eels.

Baby Brine Shrimp
Baby Brine Shrimp are often fed to the betta fry at approximately on the 7-10th day. Many people have had no problem feeding this to their fry, but most say that the baby brine shrimp are bigger than the fry themselves.

Materials:
Brine Shrimp Hatchery (see my pic of hatchery)
Aquarium salt
Tap Water
Brine Shrimp Eggs
Brine Shrimp Net
A pump
*keep them in a warm place*

Method:
Using your 2 gallon brine shrimp hatchery, place it so that the cap is on the bottom and put that on a stand or a jar just to hold it upside down. Pour in about 1 gallon of water, a couple teaspoons of brine shrimp, and then the brine shrimp eggs. Put the airline tubing w/ the airstone into the bottom of the hatchery and keep it there (with tape or something) and put the lid on. The temperature should be around 80 degrees F
If it's lower, it may take longer to hatch. Once they've hatched, turn off the aeration device and give it a minute for the bbs to swim to the bottom. The egg shells will float to the surface. Syphon the babies out from the bottom into the baby brine shrimp net and rinse with tap water and put the baby brine shrimp into the fry tank.
Baby Brine Shrimp should be fed when the fry are big enough to eat them. Many have tried using this as a first food w/ great success while many say that the baby brine shrimp were bigger than the fry themselves. This can be fed all the way until they are old enough to eat dry food. Some people say baby brine shrimp causes swim bladder disorder. I haven't tested this myself and i'm not sure about it, so if you're gonna try it, send me an email and tell me about it though i've heard that overfeeding of brine shrimp will definately cause swim bladder problems.
